The above phrase is taken from Psalm 11:3 which reads in full: “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” In these perilous last days the authority of the Bible has been undermined to the extent that God Himself has been mocked and ridiculed. Various influences have led to this, among them the suffering of two World Wars, materialism and ‘self-sufficiency’, and science and rationalisation, so called. But none of these compares with the concept of evolution, for this has effectively divorced the Creator from His Creation. Man now ‘free’ from his Maker is at liberty to ignore Him and go his own way. The moral corruption, violence and chaos among the angry nations are the results and they presage the coming wrath of God (Rev 11:18). With the Psalmist we cry, “Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men”(Psa 12:1).

Nevertheless, the Bible is true, wholly inspired and infallible. It is interesting that the words “The Foundation” are found at the head of our Statement of Faith, the BASF, and it is used of the Bible, our solid immovable rock. It reads as follows:

“That the book currently known as the Bible, consisting of the Scriptures of Moses, the prophets, and the apostles, is the only source of knowledge concerning God and His purposes at present extant or available in the earth, and that the same were wholly given by inspiration of God in the writers, and are consequently without error in all parts of them except such as may be due to errors of transcription or translation (2 Tim 3:16; 1 Cor 2:13; Heb 1:1; 2 Pet 1:21; 1 Cor 14:37; Neh 9:30; John 10:35)”.

This statement was added to the Statement of Faith following the Inspiration division that took place in the 1880’s, when there were questions over the literality of the early chapters of Genesis, when the foundations of biblical revelation were under attack.

Also it is notable that the phrase “the foundation of the world” is used in the New Testament to refer to events which took place in the early chapters of Genesis (Matt 13:35; Luke 11:50; Eph 1:4; Rev 13:8; 17:8).

A current crisis

We may be of the opinion that there do not exist within the Brotherhood today any challenges to the primacy and inspiration of the Bible. Effectively this is not so when the plain, unambiguous teaching about Creation in six days is being challenged. Some believe that there were other man-like beings present when Adam and Eve were created, the result of divinely-governed evolution over eons of time; that therefore Adam was not “the first man” (1 Cor 15:45–47), that Cain married one of these pre-Adamites etc. They have sought to marry evolution and creation, and in so doing have emasculated the clear intent of the Bible and stripped the Creator of His glory.

Our heavenly Father directs our attention to the wonders of creation as witness to His eternal power and Godhead (Rom 1:18–20). Put in other words the Creation all around us is the incontestable proof of the existence of Yahweh: He is the Maker of heaven and earth – they declare “in reason’s ear” His power and glory (Psa 19:1–6). And what room is there for evolution in the following declaration,” I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstreched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me”(Jer 27:5)?

The irony of unbelief

Never before in the history of mankind has there been so much compelling evidence for belief in the Creator, the God of Israel and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Never before has the intricacy, the complexity of Creation been understood: intelligent design stares us in the face on every level. How ironical it is that instead of this bringing awe and wonder there is denial of the Creator’s existence and unbelief!

Just think about all the wonderful systems functioning harmoniously in the human body which maintain it in life and which we unconsciously accept – the cardiovascular system, the central and sympathetic nervous systems, the digestive, the uro-genital, the skeletal, the muscular, the endocrine governed by the pituitary gland, to name but a few. en there is the complex histology of the many and varied cells of the body, the liver, the brain, the kidney – and in these are numerous, remarkable and complex biochemical reactions taking place every second of our existence! How did all this come about? By chance? I think not.

It is beyond credulity to attribute these wonders to the blind forces of chance: to say that all the mammals, birds and fish have come into existence as a result of chance mutation of genes, with the assistance of “natural selection” – survival of the fittest – over eons of time. It is absolutely ludicrous and a gross affront to our Creator. Why are the million plus species of animals discrete (clearly different) and not a continuum? Why do only a few of the so-called evolved species survive while most of the in-between forms do not? And imagine all the ‘stuffups’ on the way as most mutations are deleterious! Evolution is a theory without a mecha- nism, a fact that has become with time clearer to the unprejudiced. Truly evolution is modern man’s myth.

Take one example, the human eye

Even Charles Darwin acknowledged the difficulty accepting the concept that the exceedingly complex eye could have evolved: he wrote in his Origin of Species;” To suppose that the eye with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”

The amazing anatomy of the eye enables automatic aiming due to the musculature around it, focusing and aperture adjustment. It can function in almost complete darkness to bright sunlight; it can focus on an object as fine as a hair; make 100,000 separate motions per day; faithfully provide us with a continuous series of stereoscopic images, and while we sleep, it carries out its own maintenance. It is so sophisticated that even now it is not completely understood.

How could it ever have come about by a step by step, trial and error process!? Especially is this the case when it is realised that it would be useless unless fully developed! And Darwin knew nothing about chromosomes and genes that control, govern and stablise inherited characteristics.

The hand of The Master Designer is obvious in this; “He that made the eye, shall he not see?”(Psa 94:9)

A book requires an author; a building, an architect; music, a composer, and living things, which are varstly more complex, a Creator.

Evolution and idolatry

There is little difference between worshipping an idol and believing in evolution. In both, the obvious is denied! Yahweh says of the idolater, “He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?” (Isa 44:20) this is the case with evolutionists. They have lost the ability to be objective and see from Creation’s multitudinous and varied forms, evidence of God’s “eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Rom 1:18–20). The mental state of the idolater and evolutionist are the same: there is a fixation that has paralysed their thinking, in which the faculty to stand back and assess the facts has been lost. It has been goaded by the desire to walk after their own lusts and to debunk any sense of responsibility to a Supreme Being.

We have been warned that in the perilous last days there will be deceivers and deceived, along with those who are “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Tim 3:13, 7). We would be naïve if we thought that there would be none of these in the Brotherhood. Interminable discussion on evolution, theistic or otherwise, is fruitless and debilitating and has already seen departures from the Truth. This is such a tragedy when God’s Word is so emphatic, unambiguous and clear. Denying the existence of the Creator places one in the category of fools:” The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”(Psa 14: 1)

A dangerous place to be

Advocates of theistic evolution are in a dangerous place. It is difficult to return to plain and clear Bible teaching, if you have embraced and argued for evolution. Becoming entrenched in evolution can mean the loss of objectivity, especially if accompanied by a perception of superior knowledge because of alignment with the ‘wise’, the scientists so called, of our age. It must be remembered that “the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain” (1 Cor 3:19–20): words that can have an application today.

It is foolishness for puny man to fulminate against his Maker: “Woe to him who strives with his Maker, an earthen vessel with the potter! Does the clay say to him who fashions it, ‘What are you making’? or ‘Your work has no handles’?” (RSV, Isa 45:9). ‘Adding’ or ‘taking away’ from the Word of God (which effectively is what those who advocate evolution do, for they change clear intended meaning of Scripture), is fraught with peril (Rev 22:18–19; Deut 4:2; 12:32; Prov 30:5–6).

Creation, the cornerstone

Creation is the cornerstone of God’s purpose. From the beginning, from the creation of man He made known His purpose, that man after His image and likeness would “have dominion… over all the earth” (Gen 1:26). Isaiah affirms this purpose over 3000 years later, “For thus said Yahweh that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am Yahweh, and there is none else” (45:18).

There were men in Jeremiah’s day who sought to negate the Word of God. They suffered a tragic fate, while the prophet was vindicated. Consider what he had to say when he compared the Word of God with the false prophets: “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith Yahweh. Is not my word like as a fire? saith Yahweh; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” (Jer 23:28–29).

Isaiah is no less insistent on the need for us to heed the Bible as the source of wisdom and instruction: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (8:20); and the Apostle Peter counsels, ”If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God” (1 Pet 4: 11).

An appeal

The point of this article is to restore confidence in the biblical account of Creation and the purpose of God founded upon it. To any that have been troubled by evolutionary concepts we would counsel a return to the Bible as the only source of truth. We need calm and stability in an age of change and unending ‘advances’ in technology, which can provide access to forums that can destabilise and undermine the Truth. We appeal to you to consider what has been said, and not to dismiss the words lightly, but to accept them in the spirit that they have been written.

“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” They must be steadfast and take their stand with Moses and the prophets, with the Son of God and the apostles, for their words are God-breathed.
