Matthew records twelve ‘kingdom of heaven’ parables which liken the kingdom of heaven to something from everyday life. The ninth is in chapter 20:1-16 and depicts labourers in a vineyard. At first it isn’t clear what the kingdom of heaven is being compared to in this parable. Is it like the householder, the vineyard, or the employment and payment of labourers? Parables have many layers, and different spiritual meanings can be drawn from the same parable, but here the kingdom of heaven appears to be likened to the process of reward.
